Kids Propose Innovative Wildfire Prevention System
The six young inventors -- ages 9 to 14 -- answered the call of the First Lego League to come up with an innovative solution to a community climate problem. They picked one that's a hot topic in California: wildfires.
Forest Guard is a system that would put solar-powered cameras in the forest and help spot fires before they spread out of control. The cameras would broadcast and store snapshots on an internet server and internet surfers could flag smoldering fires before they blow up into bigger problems.
"Installing the Forest Guard pilot system into the Tahoe National Forest… would only cost about $296,000," said 13-year-old Faith Oakes. The cost of California wildfires can often cost billions, but this system would only cost about $3,000 per camera.
Sound reasonable? The Climate Action Committee thinks so. They selected the project as one of six (out of 13,000 entries) to be presented at the Climate Action Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The kids are all independent home study students, and are now trying to raise money for its trip to Denmark through fundraisers and sponsorship. You can see more details for their plan at their website.
